Melpo Axioti
Melpo Axioti (1903–1973) wrote seven books of fiction, four books of poetry, and several works of nonfiction, becoming one of Greece’s leading modernist writers. Her debut novel Difficult Nights (1938) won the Women’s Society of Arts and Letters Prize and is now considered to be Greece’s first surrealist novel. After eighteen years of exile, upon her homecoming, she wrote her swan song, Kadmo (1972).
