Robin Patten (left) receives from the John Burroughs Association president Joan Burroughs the 2019 Nature Essay Award for “The Carcass Chronicle,” published in the Fall 2018 issue of The Georgia Review. This honor, along with the John Burroughs Medal for the year’s best book and several Riverby Awards for the best natural history books for children, were given out during a ceremony held on 1 April 2019 at the Yale Club in New York City.

This was the second time in three years that a Georgia Review essay earned this recognition; the 2017 award went to
Sean P. Smith’s “The Slow and Tender Death of Cockroaches” (Fall 2016).
